Objectives:Propecia, a medication that is approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men, is an oral drug that has been approved for the treatment of this problem. The purpose of this study is to determine whether Propecia is safe and effective for the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
Methods:We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 1,200 men with male pattern hair loss treated with Propecia (5 mg finasteride, Merck) and 0.5% Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to determine the efficacy of Propecia (5 mg finasteride, Merck) in a randomized double-blind trial. This trial was conducted between August 2004 and September 2005. The subjects received 1,200 men, who received Propecia 5 mg, 1 month prior to the start of the study, and followed up for a period of 1,200 days. Subjects received a washout period of 90 days (post-finasteride washout period), and the subjects received 1 year of finasteride treatment. After the washout period, subjects were followed up for 1 year. In addition, the subjects were followed for 3 months. The study included 4,400 subjects (12,600-14,600 men), who were enrolled at baseline and 1 year of Propecia treatment. The mean age of subjects was 35.3 (range: 21-61) years. Subjects were included in the Propecia group for the 1 year of treatment period and the 1 year of Propecia treatment period. Subjects in the Propecia group were excluded from the study.
Results:The mean age of subjects was 33.8 (range: 16-47) years (n = 872). The mean duration of the Propecia treatment was 18.3 (range: 3-42). The mean number of male sexual partners was 3.8 (n = 6) for the Propecia group and 2.5 (n = 3) for the placebo group. The mean number of male sexual partners (n = 1,054) was significantly lower in the Propecia group than in the placebo group (p<.001). The mean duration of Propecia treatment was 18.6 (range: 6-45) days in the Propecia group and 18.8 (range: 5-45) days in the placebo group. The mean number of male sexual partners in the Propecia group was 1.3 (n = 1,054) for the Propecia group and 1.3 (n = 1,054) for the placebo group. There were no significant differences in the mean number of male sexual partners in the Propecia group and in the placebo group. In the Propecia group, the mean number of female sexual partners was 1.5 (n = 2) for the Propecia group and 1.6 (n = 1) for the placebo group. The mean duration of Propecia treatment was 21.6 (range: 8-31) days in the Propecia group and 22.3 (range: 6-45) days in the placebo group. The mean number of female sexual partners in the Propecia group was 1.7 (n = 1,054) for the Propecia group and 1.6 (n = 1,054) for the placebo group. There was no significant difference in the mean number of male sexual partners in the Propecia group and in the placebo group.
Conclusion:This study demonstrates that Propecia is safe and effective for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men.
